![]() Brushing petroleum sealant onto the canvas is also another way of waterproofing. If the water seeps into the canvas, then the coat was not enough and needs to be sprayed again. Once the canvas is dry, it can be checked by tossing it in a bucket of water. The canvas needs to be cleaned thoroughly and then evenly sprayed with the fluoropolymer-based product. A fluoropolymer-based product is the best for acrylic canvas. How to Waterproof Canvasįor acrylic canvas, silicone treatment is not recommended as silicone is incompatible to it. The only negative factor is its high cost. On the other hand, the acrylic canvas is a tight-weave fabric, which breathes stands up to ultraviolet radiation, snubs mildew and resists staining. Condensation causes the fabric to become wet, eventually leading to mildew. The vinyl-coated fabric, unlike the traditional cotton canvas does not breathe, and needs to be ventilated. ![]() However, cotton canvas has a special affinity to mildew, thus it has been replaced by either woven acrylic or vinyl-coated polyester. The cotton fibers in the cotton canvas swell, when they get wet, thereby sealing the weave. Cotton canvas has been the popular waterproof canvas fabric for a long time. If any paint leaked under the tape, wipe it off with a wet cotton swab or scrape any dried paint with the edge of a pair of scissors.Raw canvas has water-resisting properties, however, if the canvas is not waterproofed, water will seep through it, resulting in mildew build up. In the morning, when the paint looks absorbed into the canvas, carefully remove the tape, being careful if the paint is still wet. Step 6 Set the finished shoe on the two cups to drip and dry overnight. Use a popsicle stick to help push or blot any paint onto small uncovered spots. You can also use the cups of single color paint to help fill in any gaps, if you had any leftover paint. Step 5 Continue switching between the two cups to cover the shoe. We did 3 colors in 1 cup, and the 3 other colors in another. Step 3 Grab another cup or two and pour your paints into them, forming layers that look like a bullseye, alternating between colors a few times. Once you experiment a little, you get an idea of what consistency you need – runnier than BBQ sauce but thicker than chocolate syrup. You want to make it more pourable, but not too runny either, so start with a little, stir, and add more if needed.
